However, I strongly advice to connect the Pi-hole via Ethernet, because it’s more reliable. If you want to connect your Pi-hole via Wifi instead, I recommend to get the Pi Zero W which has WiFi onboard. Since the Pi Zero has no ethernet port, we’ll need this USB port for an ethernet adapter. It has one Micro-USB port for power supply and another one to connect a device. It’s a tiny Pi perfectly tailored for this project:Īs we can see in the picture, the Pi Zero doesn’t come with a lot of ports. For this use-case a Pi Zero should be more than enough. It goes without saying that I don’t need one of the newer Pis with more and more incredible specs. This should be sufficient, because a Pi solely running Pi-hole doesn’t need a lot of energy. As this Pi should be close to my router, I thought why not use the router’s USB port to power my Pi? I have a FritzBox 6490 (FritzBox is a common router in Germany) and the USB port provides 500mA. So an additional one for the Pi-hole is needed. However, my requirements regarding home automation changed in the meantime and I need a dedicated Pi just for this purpose. I wasn’t aware of this and most certainly do not agree with this.

It always bothered me though, that I had an ad-blocker only on my laptop. Not only for ad-blocking puproses, but also to reduce tracking. So it's possible several of my earlier versions of wpa_nf I may have actually been OK, but I never knew it. The reason I'm saying this is my putty session never connected using "raspberrypi" as the host name as is should have according to many app notes.- I had to use the IP address. Unless you see this, no point in trying to figure out why putty wasn't working. You should see "raspberrypi" in the list of connected devices. Rather than going thru all the details (lots of notes about this on line), I'll just give one suggestion to anyone trying to set it up:įirst check that it is connecting to your WiFi network by logging into your WiFi router and checking that the Pi is connected BEFORE you try and use putty. You can always use your Finder and navigate to the boot directory. Navigate into the directory using your terminal as cd /Volumes/boot/. To do that, attach your SD card to your computer again.
